Signs a friendship has quietly run its course
Most friendships don't end with a fight. They fade, usually so slowly that neither person clocks it happening — until months later, someone wonders when they last actually talked.
Most friendships don't end, they just fade
There's rarely a moment. No falling out, no unresolved issue — just a gradually longer gap between texts, until the gap becomes the default state. It's easy to miss because nothing dramatic happens to notice. The friendship doesn't break; it just stops being maintained, the same way a plant doesn't die from one bad day, it dies from a slow accumulation of not-quite-enough water.
The signs are usually logistical before they're emotional
Before it feels different, it looks different: you're not each other's first call anymore for good news or bad. Making plans starts requiring real effort instead of happening naturally. One person is consistently the one reaching out, and the other is consistently the one being reached. None of these are betrayals — they're just data. The feeling usually catches up to the pattern weeks or months after the pattern started.
Drifting isn't always a problem to fix
Not every fade needs to be reversed. People's lives genuinely diverge — different cities, different chapters, different bandwidth — and treating every quiet drift as a crisis to solve can turn a normal life transition into pressure neither person asked for. Some friendships were exactly right for a season and don't owe you permanence to have been real.
How to tell drift from doesn't-work-anymore
The honest test isn't how long it's been — it's how it feels on the rare occasion you do connect. If a catch-up after months still feels easy and warm, that's a friendship on pause, not one that's over; it might just need someone to make the first move, deliberately, instead of waiting for it to happen on its own. If it feels effortful or off, that's different information, and it's okay to let it tell you something too.
